Discover the Göta Canal – one of Sweden’s greatest engineering feats!
The Göta Canal stretches 190 km from Sjötorp on Lake Vänern to Mem on the Baltic Sea and features 58 locks. An incredible 87 kilometers were dug by hand, making it an extraordinary example of human endurance and engineering skill. Built by 58,000 soldiers Construction began in 1810 under the direction of Baltzar von Platen, with guidance from one of Europe’s leading canal engineers, Thomas Telford. When King Charles XIII gave the green light for the project, 16 regiments – a total of 58,000 Swedish soldiers – were mobilized.
The work amounts to roughly 7 million effective 12-hour workdays, most of it done with hand-dug shovels with metal blades. The total construction cost was 9 million riksdaler, which is roughly 18.2 billion kroner in 2025. Inauguration in 1832.
The canal was officially opened on September 26, 1832, in Mem, attended by King Charles XIV John and his family. Unfortunately, Baltzar von Platen never saw the completion of his life’s work, as he passed away three years earlier.
